Taking a year off from high school (in fact, any unexplained/unexcused absence) or taking the GED (a US high school graduation equivalency test) instead of graduating is greatly disadvantageous to US college admissions. Taking a year off to take the SAT test again is considered unfair. The US GED was designed to help people without high school degrees to get better paying jobs, rather than as an entrance test to US colleges. Homeschooling is much more and very different from just taking the GED.
